In this presentation, you will learn about the therapeutic benefits that coaches and companions can have with your clients whom suffer from Sex and Love addiction.  The industry of coaches and companions is unregulated, which has created harm to some of the people in need of support as these individuals lack the proper training to provide adequate and useful services. However, there is a new emergence of companies hiring credentialed workers and/or providing supervision to their coach’s/companions by a licensed worker.

You’ll learn the usefulness of such support and the timing of when to refer one of these workers will be discussed, the differences between the various types of coach’s and companions, how to screen for an ethical coach and companion, the differentiation between therapist, coach, companion, and case manager as well as the benefits of having a collaborative team approach with clients in early recovery.

Michelle Hirschman, LCSW, is a clinical professional with a deep understanding of the complexities of various types of addictions and mental health issues. Her work has ranged from clinical work at treatment centers in California, to the town of Ho in Ghana, and Hanoi, Vietnam. Michelle created the concept of “My Sober Coach,” which was designed to bridge the gap between treatment and independent living, with the focus being on continued life skills development. Michelle’s company has been helping clients in the greater Los Angeles area and abroad for 14 years.

Professionals in mental health, medicine, social work, and other client service positions often have contact with sex workers or clients of sex workers. Without an adequate understanding of how criminalization and stigma affect people working in the sex industries, professional helpers can do more harm than good. This workshop is designed to bridge the gap and open a dialogue that allows professionals to asses their own beliefs about sex work and proceed with more nuanced, applicable information about the sex industries, anti-trafficking campaigns, the global push for sex workers’ rights, and ways to work against stigma to provide better care to their clients.

Vanessa Carlisle is a queer femme author, activist, speaker, radio host and performer. She is a sex workers’ rights advocate with SWOP-LA, and has been working in the sex industries for eighteen years. She earned her PhD in Creative Writing, Literature and Gender Studies from the University of Southern California. She co-teaches the Sensuality Wellness Workshop and other workshops focused on trauma recovery, sexual health, sexual communication, and self care for social justice warriors.

CEU-Dan-GriffinThe Man Rules & Sex: It Ain’t About Just Gettin’ Laid

FREE CEU LECTURE!

This workshop explores the complex and sometimes toxic overlap between male socialization, sexuality, and intimacy. Men’s voracious and uncontrollable sexual appetites are legendary. Stories about men’s inability to commit, their philandering, sexist ideas, and homophobic behavior abound. Porn seems to be many men’s best friend. But what happens when you look a little more closely and attempt to understand some of the driving forces behind the behavior? A totally different picture emerges and with that a mandate for a new way of providing services.

Dan Griffin, M.A., is an internationally recognized author, thought leader, and expert on men’s relationships and masculinity. Griffin’s book, A Man’s Way through Relationships, is the first book written specifically to help men create healthy relationships while navigating the challenges of the “Man Rules™,” those ideas men internalize at very young ages about how to be real boys and men. In 2015, Dan was honored to be named a Senior Fellow at the world renowned leader for treating addiction and trauma, The Meadows. Griffin’s professional background includes over two decades in the mental health and addictions field. He is also the author of A Man’s Way through the Twelve Steps, the first trauma-informed book to take a holistic look at men’s sobriety. He co-authored Helping Men Recover, the first comprehensive gender-responsive and trauma-informed curriculum for addiction and mental health professionals. Griffin earned a Master’s degree in Sociology from the University of Kansas where his graduate work was the first qualitative study centered on the social construction of masculinity in the culture of Alcoholics Anonymous.

Beyond Betrayal: Surviving the Ravages of Sexual Addiction in a Monogamous, Committed Relationship

Sex addiction is often both a misunderstood and misdiagnosed problem. When viewed through the lens of affect dysregulation, sex addiction can be seen as a bona fide process addiction. It can include a variety of behaviors such as multiple affairs, numerous encounters with prostitutes, compulsive pornography usage, same sex encounters, and sometimes sexually offending behaviors such as voyeurism and exhibitionism. When a partner discovers a spouse’s infidelity has been active throughout the course of their relationship, their entire world is turned upside down leaving both parties traumatized. This talk will address the definition of sex addiction as defined by the American Society of Addiction Medicine, clarifying what sex addiction is, what it isn’t, and how to assess for it. The ravages of sex addiction are different than a single incident affair and the partner often bears the brunt of the trauma exhibiting traumatic symptoms such as intrusive thoughts, hypervigilance, an inability to sleep, and so forth. Treatment for the addict and the partner, how it differs from psychotherapy, when and how a full disclosure is facilitated as well as what to tell the children, the repair process, and movement towards restoring a healthy sex life will be addressed.
