About Ethlie

Ethlie Ann Vare has been writing about addiction and recovery for The Huffington Post, The Fix, Substance.com. She Savvy, Jezebel, and in her own popular blog Affection Deficit Disorder for a decade. Her 2011 book Love Addict: Sex, Romance and Other Dangerous Drugs was among the first to name this painful and often baffling behavior. But it was not her first book; in fact, it was her 11th.

Vare co-wrote two award-winning histories of women inventors: Patently Female and Mothers of Invention, along with the textbook Women Inventors and their Discoveries with Greg Ptacek. Her biography for young readers, Adventurous Spirit: The Story of Ellen Swallow Richards won the Public Library Association Award in 1992. She has been a visiting lecturer on the lives of remarkable women at colleges ranging from Loyola to West Point.

As a journalist, Vare won a Maggie Award for her work on ROCK Magazine. She has written for both The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal and is a former editor of Elle (Australia) and In Fashion magazines. Her music column ROCK ON was syndicated by United Features in 1,400 newspapers. As a broadcaster, she appeared regularly on the E! Channel and NBC.
